Restoration Efforts

Welcome to The Lands Council's Restoration program!

The Spokane area contains hundreds of acres-particularly on or along the Spokane River and Hangman Creek-that are in serious need of restoration for a variety of purposes, including soil stabilization and erosion control, wildlife habitat, stream health, stormwater management, shade, traffic calming and noise reduction, and neighborhood beautification.

The Lands Council is excited to head up a program aimed at planting a diverse array of native species to help rehabilitate these degraded sites.  We maintain a year-round nursery of several thousand native species; including Ponderosa pine, choke cherry, willow, aspen, cottonwood, water birch, black hawthorn, ninebark, red osier dogwood, woods rose, currant, serviceberry, Oregon grape, juniper, hemlock, and mountain ash.  Our tree planting efforts, which take place primarily from April-May and September-November, strive to engage as many people from our community as possible and encourage folks to get their hands dirty and shovels in the ground!

PROJECTS:

Plant Nursery - On April 5th, 2008 The Lands Council planted nearly 150 bare root plants that were purchased from the Spokane County Conservation District. These plants will be tended over the summer on the roof of the Saranac Building and will be used this fall in several restoration projects. We will need several volunteers to help plant the bare-root stock plants and tend them over the summer to ensure they are healthy to plant in the fall.

Sandifur Bridge Restoration - On April 20th, 2008 The Lands Council lead volunteers to pull invasive plant species and plant native plants at Sandifur Bridge in celebration of Earth Day.   On Saturday, October 4th, 2008 the Sandifur Bridge planting project was in conjunction with the Spokane River Cleanup project. We invited individuals and groups to participate in the planting early in the morning at Sandifur Bridge and then wander over for food and fun while working to clean up trash along the Spokane River and Hangman Creek in High Bridge Park.

Campion Park Restoration - On Saturday, September 27th, 2008 the plants that had been tended all summer were used for a large restoration project at Campion Park on Hangman Creek. Our Campion Park restoration planting day focused on planting more than 100 native trees and shrubs along Hangman Creek near Campion Park.  Lands Council Volunteers headed back to plant a few hundred more trees at Campion Park on April 25th, 2009.  The last tree planting at Campion Park took place on September 19th, 2009.

Peaceful Valley Restoration Efforts - In conjunction with the Peaceful Valley Neighborhood, The Lands Council is participating in a major planning effort that will lead to the restoration and redevelopment of the Peaceful Valley River Walk Park and Glove Field as well as a trail that will connect all the way up to Huntington Park in Downtown Spokane.

If you are interested in participating in any of these projects, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Kat Hall, 209-2403.
