Community Lead Team

"Kids Run Better Unleaded," a documentary produced by Community-Minded Television about The Lands Council's work with community partners to reduce childhood lead poisoning.  Watch the full documentary now!

Our community lead team held its first meeting at the end of January, its second meeting in April, had its third and fourth meetings in September of 2008, and fifth meeting in January of 2009.  The team a timeline and the Washington Department of Health has also provided a timeline of their lead work.  Community Minded Television put together a DVD documentary titled, "Kids Run Better Unleaded," based around activities our community lead team works on.  The documentary focuses on lead outreach, education, screenings, housing improvements, legal work, local exposure routes, and other news related to lead exposure.

Lead Team Accomplishments:  With EPA support (Targeted Lead and CARE Level I Grants), we engaged in activities such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) risk assessment mapping, targeted neighborhood outreach, blood lead screening of kids 6 years old and under, and home renovation. To date, The Lands Council has screened 820 Spokane children, two of which tested positive for lead poisoning (>= 10 µg/dL) and 91 of which exhibited elevated levels of lead in their blood (3.3-9.9 µg/dL). We also educated 1,300 inner-city Spokane families on the health effects, exposure factors, symptoms, and prevention of childhood lead poisoning, and distributed nearly 3,000 informational packets. In 2008, the City of Spokane performed 92 home lead risk assessments and completed lead renovation work on 83 housing units, while SNAP reviewed 72 applications, performed 34 risk assessments, and completed 17 homes. The Lands Council, City of Spokane, and SNAP joined together in October, 2008 to celebrate National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week. We distributed a fact sheet on childhood lead poisoning to 1,300 students in kindergarten classes in the Spokane School District and received excellent press coverage by KHQ-TV.
