Columbia Highlands Initiative

Between the Cascades and the Rockies lies a wild gem of rivers, mountains, and wildlife like no other place in Washington:  The Columbia Highlands.

The remaining wildlands of the Kettle River Range and Selkirk Mountains are the wild heart of the Colville National Forest.  Local people have advocated for protection of these wild forests - and the wildlife that make their home there - for several decades.  Now these wild lands have gained the attention they deserve thanks to a historic collaboration between the region's timber leaders, conservationists, recreationists, and business owners who recognize wilderness, recreation, and conservation areas as part of a balanced management plan for the Colville National Forest.

Today less than one percent of the protected wilderness in Washington State is in the Columbia Highlands of northeastern Washington.  Wilderness designation by Congress provides the strongest insurance for rare wildlife by permanently protecting our wildest country from development and destructive off-road vehicle abuse.  Wilderness safeguards our natural heritage so that our children will have the same opportunity to enjoy outdoor traditions like hiking, wildlife watching, berry picking, hunting, fishing, and camping.

Please let Congress know that the time is right to permanently protect these wild lands and wildlife by writing Senator Cantwell and Representative McMorris Rodgers.

You can make a difference for wilderness and wildlife! Join us in this historic effort to finally protect Washington's last wilderness frontier, the Columbia Highlands.

UPDATE:  TAKE ACTION!

The Colville National Forest has released a proposed action to update their forest plan. The agency has made a good start at protecting some of the most wild and special places in eastern Washington, by recommending new Wilderness on the Colville National Forest along the Kettle Crest and far northeast corner of the state.

However, they missed several key roadless areas, including 13 Mile, Twin Sisters, Quartzite, Grassy Top and Hall Mountain that are very deserving of Wilderness status.
