Umatilla National Forest
The Umatilla National Forest, located in the Blue Mountains of southeast Washington and northeast Oregon, covers 1.4 million acres. The Forest contains some mountainous terrain, but most of the Forest consists of v-shaped valleys separated by narrow ridges or plateaus. The landscape also includes heavily timbered slopes, grassland ridges and benches, and bold granite outcroppings. Elevations range from 1600 to 8000 feet above sea level. The UNF is composed of what were originally three separate forests: The Wenaha National Forest was established in 1902; the Blue Mountain National Forest; and the Heppner National Forest. Within the UNF there are three wilderness areas: the Wenaha-Tucannon (177,423 acres), the North Fork Umatilla (20,144 acres) and the North Fork John Day River (121,800 acres).
