Collaboration
The Lands Council participates in the collaborative process within diverse coalitions of stakeholders to achieve mutually held goals that include community protection from wildfire, ecological restoration, and sustainable forest management.
A leading example is the Northeast Washington Forestry Coalition. The Lands Council, along with our conservation partner Conservation Northwest, has joined with timber companies and other interests in rural communities in and near the Colville National Forest to:
• Design landscape restoration strategies.
• Prioritize management actions that reduce fire risks in the
wildland-urban interface.
• Revise timber management to follow principles of ecological sustainability and the best
scientific information.
• Promote Wilderness designation of roadless areas.
We also participate in coalitions in north Idaho to take on similar challenges in the Idaho Panhandle National Forests.
The process of collaboration emphasizes consensus-based solutions to land management challenges and conflicts by focusing on areas of common interest between various stakeholders.
