Clearwater National Forest
The Clearwater National Forest is located in northeastern Idaho and contains over 1.6 million acres of expansive forest. The jagged peaks of the Bitterroot Mountains to the east and the river canyons and the rolling hills of the Palouse prairie to the west define the area. The ridges between the deep canyons have provided travel corridors across the mountains for centuries, including use by the Nez Perce Indians and in 1805-06, the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Several major tributaries to the Columbia River, including the North Fork of the Clearwater, Lochsa, Potlatch and Palouse Rivers flow through the Forest. The Clearwater forest includes North Lochsa Slope Roadless Area, a national scenic treasure. The Forest is divided into four ranger districts with headquarters at Kooskia, Potlatch, Orofino and Lolo.
