2008 Year of Spokane's Urban Forest

Monday, January 7, 2008

            WHEREAS, The Urban Forest Council was established in 2002 to work with citizens, business owners, non-profit organizations & government agencies to enhance community forests in the Spokane region; and

            WHEREAS, Many organizations and individuals are recognizing the critical role of trees in Spokane's quality of life and stepping forward to speak and act on behalf of our trees; and

            WHEREAS, Our urban forest is a valuable resource aesthetically as well as the provider of many free life support services to wildlife, people and the environment; and

            WHEREAS, Our urban forest acts as green infrastructure, capturing storm water, delaying and filtering pollutants before they enter the Spokane River thereby providing public utility services; and

            WHEREAS, The actions we take over the next few years will determine the future of our urban forest and the character of its tree canopy for generations yet to come; and

            WHEREAS, The Urban Forest Council is working with our City's Urban Forestry Program, the Spokane County Conservation District's Urban Forester as well as other arboricultural and horticultural organizations to raise awareness of the importance of trees to the quality life in Spokane; and

            WHEREAS, Citizens of Spokane are displaying an expanding awareness of the value of our urban forest and the role individuals can play in nurturing our community trees; and

            WHEREAS, the Audubon Society is sponsoring the Evergreen Cities Act which would provide support for restoring urban forests in Washington; and

            WHEREAS, By proclaiming 2008 as Year of Spokane's Urban Forest, the City of Spokane recognizes the critical importance of this valuable natural resource and the various contributions we all can make:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, MARY VERNER, Mayor of the City of Spokane, on behalf of the citizens of Spokane do hereby proclaim 2008 as
THE YEAR OF SPOKANE'S URBAN FOREST
            and call upon citizens to join me in recognition and participation in this special observance, and encourage them to work together to protect and nurture our community forests.

I, Mary Verner, Mayor of Spokane do hereto set my hand and cause the seal of the City of Spokane

to be affixed this 7th day of January in 2008.  Mary Verner Mayor
