Sustainability

In 2008, The Lands Council's Executive Director was appointed to the Spokane Mayor's Sustainability Task Force, the first effort in the nation to jointly address adaptation to and mitigation of climate change and peak oil. Two of our staff co-chaired task force committees. The Lands Council (TLC) was tasked with holding public outreach meetings throughout the community. We created a climate change scenario for the Spokane region. As part of the discussion of carbon emissions, TLC produced a white paper on greenhouse gas emissions from solid waste disposal comparing incineration and landfilling. We continue working with Spokane on its Climate Action Plan, which has now been integrated into the work of the Sustainability Task Force.

The Task Force completed a Sustainablity Action Plan, which has action steps in energy, water, transportation, climate adaptation and the built environment. A copy of the Action Plan can be viewed at www.greenspokane.org.
